Earth Moon Observatory

Explore our closest celestial pair in an interactive 3D observatory.

Zoom into Earth to inspect its blue atmospheric rim, major gases and notable trace gases. Visit the Moon to learn why its invisible exosphere is unlike Earth’s air. Compare escape velocities with a simple launch experiment, and compare whether life exists, how favorable conditions are, and why.

Drag to orbit, scroll or pinch to zoom, and choose Earth, Moon or System to move between views. Includes touch buttons and keyboard shortcuts (1 Earth, 2 Moon, 0 or Esc system). Body sizes are proportional; switch between compact and true-distance system views. Earth’s thin atmospheric rim and the Moon’s sparse exosphere particles are exaggerated for clarity; rotation and probe trajectories are illustrative.
