A first-person walk across a storm-struck fairy country. It starts in Kansas: a dirt track, a windmill and the mobile home you live in, with a twister coming across the wheat. Your aunt and uncle are already down in the family storm cellar, a lamp-lit pit dug into the yard with its bulkhead doors thrown open — walk past them and get inside the trailer, because the cellar is bolted to the ground and the trailer is not. The storm keeps you up for five minutes. Walk around your own living room while it turns in the funnel with your dog at your heels. There is a wide trapdoor in the floor: stand at it and press E to haul it up, and because the cellar stayed behind in Kansas there is nothing under the hole but the drop and the turning storm. Sit down on the edge of your own bed while the room goes round, because it is the steadiest thing in there. The windows are real openings: as each line of the ride lands, the thing it names goes by outside the glass, a windmill blade, a whole red barn roof, a run of fence posts still wired together, a water tank, close enough to watch from inside the room. Stand at any window and press E to crank it open and let the racing cloud in. Press Space any time to swing the camera outside and watch your home spin among the wreckage the twister is carrying, then press it again to come back in. Stand at the screen door if you would rather be set down early. It sets down whole beside the head of a yellow brick road, and Kansas is a world away behind you — and you ride it all the way down, so when it stops you are still standing in your own living room, not out on the bricks. The storm has left the bed dragged off the wall, the table upside down and the chairs thrown across the room; walk to the screen door and step out onto the road when you are ready, and it stays yours to walk back into any time. Walk the bricks: past mushroom cottages, a cornfield where a scarecrow hangs on his pole, a forest where a woodman has rusted stiff, a deep dark where the trees close in if you leave the bricks, and a poppy field that will put you to sleep unless you keep running. Gather three companions who walk the road beside you, gather emeralds, reach the green city, and click your heels three times.
