You are the drowned captain of the R.M.S. Titanic, back aboard her on the night of 14 April 1912. She is built here as she really was: 882 feet of black topsides over red anti-fouling, two rows of lit portholes down her side, three tiers of white promenade deck railed along her whole length, four buff-and-black funnels, open well decks fore and aft, her forecastle anchors and the crow's nest her lookouts stood in. You wake deep in her boiler rooms at the very bottom of the ship — cut through the stokers, climb the companion stair to the boat deck in first person, light the lanterns that call your passengers back aboard, then take the wheel and put her onto the ice yourself. Stay at your post while the bridge goes under, and watch the water climb her first stack until her propellers lift clear and she slides away.
